ZENIT GmbH, founded in 1984, is a public-private partnership with around 60 employees and the agency for innovation and European affairs of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
We pave the way and help you gain a foothold in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), one of Europe’s leading regions. As a competent partner in a number of European support networks, helping local organisations enter markets abroad and assisting their foreign counterparts in NRW is our business. We are your best port of call for all transnational activities. ZENIT is owned by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, a consortium of banks and an association comprising some 190 enterprises. On behalf of EU, national and regional bodies, we provide services for the benefit of companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as universities and research institutions. Our clients come from NRW, throughout Germany and abroad.
Biogas in NRW
Currently, about 620 biogas plants are in operation in North Rhine-Westphalia. The installed capacity of the existing plants is 300 MW, which corresponds to an average plant capacity of 486 kWel.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, biogas plants generate around 2.1 million megawatt hours of electricity. With an assumed annual consumption of 4,500 kilowatt hours, the demand of 466,000 households can thus be covered. The use of freely available heat is 1.09 million MWh of externally used thermal energy. This can replace 109 million liters of heating oil.
